Education Law

Overview

Education law covers a wide area. Education in England is overseen by the United Kingdom's Department for Education and Department for Business, Innovation and Skills. Apart from schools that have been converted into academies, local government authorities are responsible for public education policy.

The UK education has four stages based on age:

  • Foundation Stage (ages 3–5)
  • Primary education (ages 5–11)
  • Secondary education (ages 11–18)
  • Tertiary education (ages 18+)

"Sixth form" or "college", studies usually undertaken by students over the age of 16, gives the option for alternative qualifications such as BTEC, the International or the Cambridge Pre-U.

At all four stages there is always the option for parents to send their children to independent schools.

Students will often follow their school studies up with Higher Education. This usually involves a three years bachelor’s degree, although this depends on the subject being studied.

Students can then potentially do postgraduate studies. This includes Masters courses which usually last a year and doctorates which last several years, usually 3 to 4.
